The extracellular vesicles of Fasciola hepatica

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) released by parasites have important roles at the host-parasite interface. We have shown that adult Fasciola hepatica secretes at least two sub-populations of EVs that differ according to size, cargo molecules and site of release from the parasite. We integrated our proteomics data with recently available transcriptomic datasets to investigate EV biogenesis pathways and have shown that the genes within these pathways are expressed at similar levels across the different parasite stages. In contrast, the molecules packaged within the EVs are more regulated most likely facilitating parasite migration through host tissue and to counteract host immune attack.
